On Tuesday, 12 January 2010 a massive earthquake stuck Haiti and in the resulting carnage nearly 1/4 million people died and many, many more were severely hurt or injured.
As a result of the falling debris and the nature of the Haiti infrastructure many of the injuries were the result of limbs being crushed or trapped and many, many people had to additionally endure the trauma of losing one or more of their limbs.
The UN and the World provided immediate relief and raised (somewhere in the region of) $500 million to donate to towards the rescue and recovery of the Haitian people.
To date some 2000 people have died. (That is at least 228,000 less than died in Haiti 6 months earlier)
It is now reported that the UN is hoping to raise $2 billion (Source:http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-south-asia-11351151) to donate to Pakistan to help with aid and recovery.
